"Staircase Wit: Shake Tech" with Sal Daher

After recording the full episode titled “Tech & Weight Control” I realized I left out some important technologies I use in making the shakes that support my keeping off 100 pounds. So, here’s a mini-episode with that staircase wit, as the French call it.

Transcript of, “Staircase Wit: Shake Tech”

The French have an expression for when you think of something to say after the best time to say it has passed. They call it “esprit de le escalier” which means “wit of the staircase” or “staircase wit”. You think about the perfect thing to have said as you go down the staircase on your way out.

I recorded this episode in one stretch but when I finished, I realized I left out some important things, namely my shake-making tech stack. So instead of bothering Raul about inserting this passage into the episode I thought I’d launch it as bonus content. So here it is.

Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker

How could I have forgotten my beloved Ninja Creami ice cream maker! I have a pint of the ice cream made with two HMR 70+ Chocolate packets, every night. It loads me up with 30 grams of high-grade protein before sleeping and keeps me from noshing on junk. When I put frozen cherries on the ice cream the whole thing still comes in at less than 300 calories, counting the tablespoon of fat-free, sugar-free Instant Jell-O Pudding and the two tablespoons of Ghirardelli 100% Cocoa Powder.

Some downsides: the Ninja Creami takes up a lot of space and requires a lot of preparation. It is necessary to use a blender to prepare the mix, which has to be frozen for 24 hours. It’s also really pricey. I’m lucky that my sister Elizabeth got me one as present. Thanks, Elizabeth.

Ninja Bullet & Cuisinart Mini-Prep Plus Are Smaller & Cheaper Alternatives

Faster and cheaper options to achieve pretty appealing results include devices that crush ice such as the Ninja Bullet or the Cuisinart Mini-Prep Plus. I’ve seen great results from those, but I don’t use them myself.

Shaker Bottles Are Real Calorie-Savers

The other part of my wit of the staircase pertains to my trusty shaker bottle. I used my old plastic one so much on my recent travels that it cracked. I just picked up a new one at Whole Foods. It’s made of steel so it should last longer.

The great thing about shaker bottles is that I can make a 16-ounce shake with just water and two HMR 70+ Chocolate packets (220 calories). It fills me up and stops my mind wandering towards less wise food choices. It’s amazing how my outlook on life changes after I’ve had a shake.

Acaia Digital Scale

Oh, before I forget, a word about the scale I use all the time to keep track of how many calories I’m eating. I got it on the Blue Bottle Coffee website, it’s an Acaia digital scale and it’s awesome. It’s super convenient. I have it set to weighing things by grams just to keep up my mental math skills. It’s made me really good at dividing by twenty-eight.

This is the end of my staircase wit about my shake-making tech stack.
